Improving Teaching and Learning:  Community Partnership Approach – This presentation will explore the synergistic potential of collaborative partnerships and efforts amongst base and community institutions who share a common mission—education and training. Presenters are Dr. Jesse Taylor, Dr. Brook Dickison, and Mrs. Susan Williams from Angelo State University, Mrs. Lana Hubbard from Howard College, and Lt Col Kevin Boss, 17th Training Group, Goodfellow AFB.

Operational Training Infrastructure (OTI) for Warfighter Readiness – This presentation will provide a foundational overview of OTI basic concepts, capabilities and the 13 Lines-of-Effort (with current status) which will initially support Air Force Operational Training with the vision of expanding these capabilities to other functional areas such as education. Presented by Dr. Edward Degnan and Dr. John Jacobs, Air Force Agency for Modeling and Simulation.

Designing the Future Foreign Language Classroom - The 517th Training Group at the Presidio of Monterey is focused on improving outcomes and empowering learners of foreign languages.  The newly designed Cryptologic Language Analyst (CLA) Preparatory course is focused on preparing students through various metacognitive and cognitive awareness raising interventions and language learning strategies for the rigor of second language acquisition (SLA).  Presented by Ms. Julie Cantwell and MSgt Benjamin Steel, 517 Training Group.

Learning to Coach; Coaching to Learn - The Learning to Coach; Coaching to Learn peer-to-peer coaching initiative was launched when Vandenberg Faculty Development exposed a collaboration and engagement gap among instructors, developers and students during Basic Instructor Course redesign. Developers and instructors struggled to design and facilitate active learning strategies; and, our first students demonstrated minimal collaboration and engagement. We are solving this problem by adapting peer-to-peer coaching processes to reframe relationships among instructors and developers around learner-centric and innovative themes and instructional strategies. Presented by Kristen Lewis, Douglas Fields, Technical Sergeant Kira Whiting and Staff Sergeant Scott Walker, 381st Training Group, Vandenberg AFB.

1350 – 1515 Break / Vendor Floor Open

1530 – 1620 Session B Presentations
An Exemplar Competency-based, Proficiency-driven Readiness Training Ecosystem - This presentation will highlight seminal work in the creation of methods to define competencies for warfighter training.  A review of the literature on the competency approach will be provided and presenters will discuss the mechanism used to implement the process and data in operational contexts around the world.  Presented by Dr. Winston “Wink” Bennett, Air Force Research Laboratory.

Performance Based Evaluations – The 82nd Training Group devised a week-long capstone exercise at MOIC to challenge seasoned Aircraft Maintenance Officers. The exercise is designed to force officers to utilize their experience and the lesson material to develop a deployment plan to a bare base (short notice). The exercise encompasses multiple areas of logistics that are outside of the Aircraft Officer’s career field. It forces the officers to realize how interlinked we are in a joint fight and strategize. Presenter is Maj Cassidy Bair, Sheppard AFB.

Capstones and Outcomes: Using Capstone Events to Assess Student Achievement - Capstone events, if well designed, provide experiences for students to demonstrate comprehensively knowledge and skills attained across their education program.  As culminating events, capstones offer opportunities to capture evidence of how effective the program has been in producing students who have fully achieved the student learning outcomes for the program. Presented by Dr. Tony Klucking and Dr. Ithuriel Arden Gale, Air University.

Strategies for Deeper Learning - We often discuss the need to ensure learners have the resources and support they need to be successful.  However, we don’t always talk about the need to teach learners how to learn in order to be successful.  Too often, we focus on teaching facts and tasks, sometimes to the detriment of actual learning.  In this session, the presenter will share six strategies that can lead to deeper learning.  Presented by Dr. Shelley Howell, Teaching and Learning Services, University of Texas San Antonio.

1620 – 1700 Vendor Floor Open

Soft-Skills Competency Development during First-Term Enlistment – Implications for integrating specific soft skills in formal and on-the-job training are discussed based on a study that tested 17 Air Force institutional competencies (e.g. accepting feedback, self-awareness, collaboration) that are more or less amenable to longitudinal development. Presented by AETC Force Development Competencies Division.

Facilitating Warfighter Self-Development for Managing Complexity - This presentation will focus on demonstrating the features a website created by the Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI). This site is based on a multi-year program of research on competencies for operational design and strategic thinking, emphasizing the diverse ways in which learners are able to explore and engage with content and discover new resources for their learning and skill development. Presented by Dr. William S. Weyhrauch, Research Psychologist, US Army.
