JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Christopher Amrhein, commander of Air Force Recruiting Service, and U.S Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Rebecca Arbona, AFRS command chief, welcomed 36 educators, civic leaders, and influencers from across the nation to Joint Base San Antonio June 10-14, 2024.
The educational tour is designed to provide a comprehensive look at the diverse opportunities available within the Air Force and Space Force, both in uniform and beyond. AFRS conducts these tours multiple times yearly, welcoming participants from diverse educational regions and backgrounds. Through these tours, attendees gain valuable insights into the military's vast array of career paths, making it an enriching experience for all involved.
"We share a common goal with the educators to encourage young people to stay in school and challenge themselves in their academic and educational pursuits," said Michelle Deleon, AFRS chief of civic outreach. "This was a great opportunity to showcase what the world's greatest Air Force and Space Force has to offer full or part-time, in or out of uniform."
Participants were not just spectators, but active learners, exposed to various mission sets and training tools, providing a comprehensive view of the training process. They interacted with trainees and instructors, gaining valuable insights into the daily experiences and the dedication required to succeed in the military. Educators were encouraged to ask Airmen and Guardians questions throughout the tour, thus enhancing their understanding of the training and development programs.
"My experience with the Air Force educator tour was truly eye-opening and inspirational. I am 50 years old and wish that I could enlist," said Joseph Pishioneri, Springfield City, Iowa, Council President. "There truly is so much the military has to offer our younger people. I will take back the knowledge I have learned to share with my school district, students, and their parents."
The tour featured stops at various JBSA wings, including the 560th Flying Training Squadron, 99th Flying Training Wing, 59th Medical Wing, 344th Training Squadron, Special Warfare Training wing, and the U.S. Air Force Band of the West. It concluded with participants attending a Basic Military Training graduation.
"This ongoing commitment to outreach and education is vital in maintaining a strong and informed relationship between the military and the public especially our educational institutions," said Lt. Col. Michael Armstrong, 368TH RCS commander and tour host. "The AFRS educator tour is just one part of the Air Force's broader effort to engage with the civilian community and promote a better understanding of military careers."
